Welcome to My Daughter Stacey

Stacey will be coming in to visit on New Year's Eve. I thought I'd honor Stacey with this memory picture from 1986. It was taken at Fenway Park with many members of the Boston Red Sox.

On another matter, shortly I will be putting in part 2 of Sean McCarty's story of the Yawkey League Champion East Boston Bluefish. Soon we'll have something on the Someville Alibrandis 20th Anniversary celebration that they'll be having this year. I'm talking to Mike Powers as we speak. If anybody has any information about the Alibrandis over the last 20 years, please send it to this blog.

One more thing, Andy Katz has also put together a column for us in regard to his club for ballplayers that he has started with Red Sox star Kevin Youkilis. His charity is called Kevin Youkilis Hits for Kids. The website for more information on that is www.gripnripclub.com.

Talk to you soon, Stu.

Welcome to Justin.....and Ben

I just wanted to welcome to our list of followers one of my two favorite people in the entire world. No, YBL, not Arlen Showstack or Dave McKay, even though they are way up there.

Welcome to Cousin Stu's Stats, my son Justin Sklaver. He is now a follower of our new, but hopefully illustrious blog. Who's my other fave? My daughter Stacey, of course.

Justin's friend Ben, is a follower of Justin's blog, so I guess in a round about way, he is also one of our followers.

Justin is out in San Francisco trying to finish college and create the best video games in the world.

If anyone wants to see any stories from "The dude", let me know. I'll pass it on to him. Maybe he can give us a little insight of the Bay Area.

Trivia answer

The player who hit in all 14 World Series games that he played in ( a record) is the one and only Roberto Clemente.

Trivia time

Almost forgot today's trivia question....
What player appeared in 14 World Series games and had a hit in each one of them (a major league record) ?

what a sports weekend!!!!!

I know its really early in the season, but is it THAT early to start getting pumped up about this being TITLETOWN once again???

First off, what's gotten in those Bruins?...A little dose of Milan Lucic magic maybe?...Yesterday, the B's pummeled the Florida Panthers 7-4 @ the Boston Garden. When I say pummeled, I mean it. Just ask ex-Bruin Nick Boynton, who chose to go mano e mano with Lucic, and came up a bloody mess. He looked like Sean Michaels after a match on Monday Night Raw....but the best was tonight...after the B's had to stand and watch, big time Canadien Jerk, Patrick REWWWWAAAA (Roy) get his #33 retired, the Canadiens sent their tough guy who never plays after Lucic, strictly to bring him to the penalty box. Lucic, said Naa ahhh. Not this time. Then scored the goal that tied the game. The B's would eventually win the game in the shootout....Ladies and Gentleman, with tonights victory, Your Boston Bruins, now stand in FIRST PLACE in the NHL East, by a full two points over the Rangers. But, are you sitting down. The B's are seven points ahead of Montreal. OLAY OLAY OLAY OLAY!!!!!!!!!

The Celtics...After that ridiculous suspension of Kevin Garnett last week, you would have thought that the C's would be there for the taking. And maybe they were. But after wins against the Knicks, Detroit and the Timberwolves, they same to be on their way as well. And yes they are also in first place in the NBA East. HOOOO HAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boston College Eagles....Today the Eagles had every reason to lay down and lose to Wake Forest in North Carolina. Not only were they playing in hostile territory, but after jumping out to a 13-0 early lead, they lost their Tom Brady, QB Chris Crane, for who knows how long. His replacement was a redshirt freshman, Dominique Davis, who to be perfectly honest with you, I've never heard of. He went on to play like a freshman, fumbling once right into a Demon Deacon players hand, who walked in for a TD. But, the killer came with about four minutes left. BC was to punt from their, I think the 30-35 yard line. They had a 16-14 lead. All they needed to do was to control the Wake offense, which they had done all day, and it would have been over. But Wake blocked the punt and took over at the BC one yard line. One play later Wake led 21-16. You would have thought it was over....Davis had his bar-mitzvah, he became a man. He drove BC 70 yards in 3 minutes, scoring from the 1 to give BC an exciting 24-21 comeback win. Right now, BC is tied with Maryland for First place in their conference of the ACC.......FOR BOSTON FOR BOSTON

The Pats....We'll talk tomorrow.

Joe O'Hara and the Farr Academy

I'm sure most, if not all of you know Joe O' Hara, the manager of the Al Thomas A's.

Well, I've read some interesting facts about the guy today that could win him a Shattuck Award. It is even more interesting to read considering that the holidays are fast approaching. You'll want to read on.

Joe works with a 501 non-profit organization, Farr, Inc. They operate three programs for children and young adults who are at risk, disabled or autistic.

One of the schools is the Farr Academy in Cambridge. This facility is a Junior and Senior High School for children who are at major risk for dropping out of school. They have learning and emotional problems and Farr could be their last hope to turn things around.

The Agape Inn in Holbrook is a home for developementally delayed and/or autistic children or young adults. These youths suffer from a wide range of disabilities, either have no families or are taken away from their families by DSS because they simply cannot care for them properly. The children, ranging in age from 6-18, live at Agape with 24-hour care, with full time nursing staffs. They are taught social skills in the hopes of developing them emotionally, physically and mentally.

Lastly, there is the Brookline Infant Toddler or BITC in Newton, which is a pre-school. It's felt that any child regardless of handicapped condition deserves the richest life possible.

To help raise money for these far less fortunate, but just as beautiful children, and to keep these outstanding facilities going...Joe O'Hara wrote this in his Facebook today. I know he wouldn't mind if I shared it with you.

"We have our golf tournament on June 16,2009 at the Indian Pond CC in Kingston. I'm looking for anyone to help out on the golf committee. We meet in Holbrook and Cambridge, whichever is more convenient, and the meetings are not mandatory, as long as I can communicate via e-mail and phone. We need help so that we can reach out and tell our story to more people, hopefully some of whom may also believe in our mission and want to support our cause in any way they are able. We don't know who you might know, so we're hoping to bring aboard some conscientious people to help us with fresh ideas and lead us to more friends"
To reach Joe at Farr the number is 617-497-2620 ext 35
I don't know about you, but I'm extremely proud to say that I know Joe O' Hara.

Skip's Corner...The Birth of a Champion

This is the very first of many installments of the musings of Skip McCarty, the Manager of this year's Yawkey Baseball League champions, the East Boston Bluefish...

The Birth of a Champion....

The feeling of glory from winning a championship has come and gone, but its never a bad time to go back and reminice.

The road to a championship began four years ago, back in 2005, when the Bluefish entered the Yawkey League. We knew that the league would be a whole lot tougher than where we came from, but came prepared for battle, both for year number one and beyond.

One of the first things I wanted to do was to assemble a coaching staff, because, playing as often as we had, I was hoping to get more than just my own input in molding a championship caliber team.

Out of the clear blue, Larry Charbonneau e-mailed me. This was a former MABL manager asking me if he could come on board to help out. He also brought along with him some very important players with him. A magical three-pack of Nichols College baseball stars, namely 2008 Playoff MVP Chris Santosuosso, Chris Demers and Sean Glavin. These guys have been with the team since the very beginning and eventually play a huge part for the 2008 championship team.

Larry's recruiting would prove to be invaluable, especially prior to the 2008 season. We also brought with us a few MABL veterans to help deepen our bench, including utility man Mike Lembo and jack of all trades Anthony Leonelli. These guys would be heard from again in 2008. They, along with Bluefish MABLers Jeremy Creveling and Al Becker, amongst others, would form the Bluefish of 2005.

The team played well in its inaguaral season, going 22-9-1, includings wins against the top three seeds during the regular season. A #5 seed was the reward in the playoffs, with a chance to face the #4 seed, the Brighton Brewers (then known as the T's Mariners).

A highly competive 5 game series was to follow. But, it was the Brewers coming out on top, with a walkoff 1-0 victory in game 5, even though Chris Demers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

2006 and 2007 brought two more playoff appearances, including a semi-final defeat to those same Brewers, setting the stage for 2008.

(Next week) The final puzzles are put together for the 2008 season.....

2008 Al Thomas A's

As promised, I've been trying to put together some reviews of the 2008 season in the Yawkey Baseball League and what the 2009 schedule looks like.

Alphabetically, Lets start with Joe O'Hara's Al Thomas A's.

Here's what Coach O'Hara had to say, " The 2008 season was a long for the A's, as job commitments and injuries took away the teams four best hitters and the two best pitchers for close to two-thirds of the year.

But there were encouraging signs, however. Many rookies got extended playing time, were very successful, and the team made the playoffs. A 1-0 loss to top seeded Malden was followed up by a 7-1 loss in Game 2 of those playoffs to knock the A's from the post season. But, the A's bowed out graciously.

I was proud of my team advancing to the playoffs, as we basically lost our number two through five hitters for the entire season after just ten games. I brought aboard nine 19 year olders and yet another 18 year old rookie, and guess what, they all contributed for us.

It was what you might call an accidental rebuilding year. We were last in team defense, next to last in team offense. So those are things, in particular that we must address in the off season.

We hope to compete for another championship in 2009."

Thank you Joe

Al D's Sideliner Notes
I would like to take this time to honor the girls field hockey team in Watertown for an outstanding season in 2008.

This team was young and inexperienced, but for 20 weeks they put the Middlesex League on notice that they were not going to be pushed around by anyone. That did this by earning an incredible accomplishment, winning the league crown with a 13-0-5 regular season record that saw them achieve the #1 seed in the North Sectional Girls Field Hockey Division 2.

Once the playoffs started, the Raiders opened up against mighty Belmont. But, it was in this game where the girls of Watertown began to get the State's attention. Even though this was a game held on Halloween, neither team was willing to give up that extra or in this case, an overtime goal. But little did anyone expect this game to go triple overtime, in which superstar freshman Erika Kelly got credit for the winning goal for the Raiders, 3-2.

It was then on to the next round against a team that always seems to be there in the end, Bishop Fenwick. The game started out very well for the Raiders, as almost single handidly, Kelly would net a hat trick in just the first half alone, giving Watertown a 3-1 at intermission. The second half was not quite as successful as Fenwick roared back to tie the game at 3-3. But the Raiders were not deterred. This one again went to overtime, where Kelly again worked her Raider magic, by scoring yet her fourth goal of the game to again send the victory to Watertown.

With that victory in the books, watertown now earned a bid to the Division 2 North Sectional Title game against Manchester Essex. This one proved to be a real nail biter. After Manchester scored first, that girl Kelly scored again in the second half to tie it. The game went OT once more, but this time a different hero arose. Lauren Giadano would score the game winner for the Raiders.

That 2-1 victory sent The Raiders to State Semis against the strong and talented Hillers of Hopkinton. Just think, one more win for Watertown and its on to the finals.

Things started brilliantly in this one as Giadano and Bianca Jones each scored to send the Raiders into halftime with what appeared to be a commanding 2-0 lead. But, Hopkinton didn't come this up the hill to be heartbroken, as, to their credit, they scored three unanswered second half goals to win it 3-2, and thus end Watertown's bid for a 10th State title.

But, while the Raiders didn't take home the big prize, what they did accomplish was to prove the critics wrong in 2008 by fighting all the odds. All this, being led by a freshman goal scorer.

Congratulations to the team and coaches on a job well done.

Todays trivia

Today's question is pretty interesting....

Which former American League Rookie Of The Year, who spent a short time with the Red Sox, once got placed on the Disabled List, because he fell asleep in a tanning booth? And no, it's not George Hamilton.

Free agency predictions as promised....

Today's column is totally based on predictions only...MINE!!!

I put a list together of what I thought were the key Free Agents this year and where I thought they would end up.....So lets get started.

Catchers
1. Jason Varitek- He'll soon be 37, His Agent is the Evil Boros Monster and his starting negotiations came in at the same salary of what Posada got $14M per. The difference here is that Jorge can still hit and hit for power, while El Capitan is more of a Defensive player now. So for Varitek to get 4 years and over $50 million is a pipedream....Realistically, if he wants to stay here, and the Sox would like that, he's looking at two years at about 5.5 Million per. If the Sox get Saltalamacchia, still a possibility, Tek can train him.
Prediction----The Red Sox---(no other team interested)

2. Pudge Rodriguez- Everyone needs a good catcher, but Pudge would be an incredible back up, wouldn't he? He's also insurance, if Tek goes to the Tigers.
Prediction----The Red Sox---(no other team interested)--but if they get Salty, neither will Boston

3. Paul LoDuca- Definately on the decline, but weak Free Agent group of catchers.
Prediction----Cincinnati Reds---(Padres, Tigers)

4. Javier Valentin- No more than a platoon player at best.
Prediction----San Diego Padres--(Reds, Tigers)

First Baseman
1. Mark Texeira- The big offensive gun out there. Lots of teams want him. Can the Angels afford to lose him?
Prediction----Boston Red Sox---(Angels, Nationals, Orioles, Yankees)

2. Jason Giambi- Still has that Balco power. Had 32 homers last year. Some team, most likely on the West Coast, will want a strong lefty power hitter.
Prediction----Oakland A's-------(Giants, Mariners, Angels, Blue Jays, Orioles, Yanks)

Second Baseman
1. Orlando Hudson- The ODog had three straight solid years and there is no other competing second sacker on the market. Great timing for a big contract.
Prediction----White Sox---------(Marlins, Cardinals, Dodgers, Mets, Yankees)

2. Ray Durham- After mid-season trade to Brewers, he helped bring them to the playoffs. At 37, with his bat, he'll get a job.
Prediction----Brewers------------(Marlins, Cardinals, Dodgers)

Shortstops
1. Rafael Furcal- From what I hear, he wants to return to LA, but he may receive more offers than any other player on the market. So Toronto could tempt him.
Prediction----Dodgers------------(Blue Jays, A's, Red Sox, Giants, Braves, Orioles, Indians, Royals & Cubs)

2. Orlando Cabrera- He'll end up at one of the teams chasing Furcal, or--
Prediction----Blue Jays----------(Orioles, Dodgers, Royals & Twins)

3. Edgar Renteria- Mediocore year. Not a very good American League player.
Prediction----Cardinals----------(Braves, Orioles)

Third Baseman
1. Casey Blake- Had good year. Dodgers will try to hold him, Indians want him back dearly.
Prediction----Indians-------------(Dodgers, Twins)

2. Joe Crede- Power hitter if he is to stay healthy.
Prediction----Dodgers-------------(Indians)

Outfielders
1. Manny Ramirez- He wants the long term contract, Dodgers not willing, but they are ready to strike with a contract that would make Manny the highest paid player in baseball annually by meeting him down the middle. Sounds like a match made in heaven to me. I still firmly believe, as Bill Lee said, with Manny Ramirez, the Red Sox are the 2008 champs.
Prediction----Red Sox---(JUST KIDDING)----
Real Prediction---Dodgers--------(Angels, Blue Jays, Orioles, Giants, Yanks, Mets & Phillies

2. Bobby Abreu- He wants three years to stay in New York. This would be his first choice. But the length of the contract is too much for Brian Cashman.
Prediction-----Cubs-----(Mets, Blue Jays & Yankees)
Update---The Yankees have offered Abreu arbitration. It is thought that this was done so that they could receive draft choices, if and when Abreu walks.

3. Adam Dunn- Believe it or not, for four straight seasons Dunn has hit 40 homers, ON THE NOSE. This has to be some kind of a record. So is his strikeout speed.
Prediction-----Nationals----(Cubs)

4. Raul Ibanez- The Mariners had a chance to trade him last year and they blew it. Big dummies. Now he can walk for nothing.
Prediction-----Cubs-----(Mets, Rays, Royals)

5. Milton Bradley- He can hit, but such a cancer in every clubhouse he plays for. He'll soon leave Texas too. Reminds me of Carl Everett.
Prediction-----Rays-----(Blue Jays, Nationals)

6. Pat Burrell- Loves Phillies, but they aren't interested anymore.
Prediction-----Mets-----(Cubs, Rays, Red Sox)

7. Garrett Anderson- All time Angel leader in everything. Time to leave LaLa land.
Prediction-----Mariners---(Cubs, Mets)

8. Rocco Baldelli- Great that he was able to come back and win a ring last year. Should get to play for his hometown team.
Prediction----Red Sox---(Phillies, Rays)

9. Jim Edmonds- Pulled a Roger Clemens last year. Missed the first two months, almost retired, then showed everyone he still had it.
Prediction----White Sox----(Brewers, Retire)

10. Ken Griffey, Jr.- There's no place like home!
Prediction-----Mariners---(No one else)

Designated hitter
1. Mike Sweeney- Possible help. He can hit when healthy, which is not often. But Sweeney has a great clubhouse presence.
Prediction-----Rays----(no one else)

2. Frank Thomas- Same as top, except for the clubhouse deal.
Prediction-----Rays----(no one else)

Starting Pitchers
1. CC Sabathia- Want $25 Million? He can have it. He will hit the jackpot this year. Prefers the West Coast and the NL, but with all these teams making big offers, who knows?
Prediction----Yankees----(Brewers, Angels, Dodgers, Giants & Mets)

2. AJ Burnett- Had a year where he wasn't injured and was close to domination. Should top $20 Million. Listen to the list after the prediction.
Prediction----Red Sox----(Yanks, Blue Jays, Orioles, Dodgers, Braves, Rangers, Cubs, Mets & Angels) WOW!

3. Derek Lowe- Do you know that DLowe has tossed 200 innings in 5 out of 6 years. He's pretty durable. I think he might be the best starter of them all, but who am I? The Sox would welcom him home as a second option if they lose out on Burnett.
Prediction----Yankees/Red Sox---(Tigers, Braves, Mets, Cardinals, Blue Jays, White Sox, Angels)

4. Ryan Dempster- Last year's DLowe, he won, switching from the closers role to the starting rotation. He wants to remain a Cubbie, but....
Prediction----Cubs---(Braves, Mets, Cardinals, Blue Jays)
Update-----Yesterday signed a 4 year deal to stay with the Chicago Cubs

5. Mike Mussina- 20 wins at age 39. A remarkable experience for him. If he doesn't retire, he'll only return as a Yankee.
Prediction----Yankees-----(RETIRE?)
Update------Mussina retired today...most likely will be a Hall of Famer

6. Andy Pettitte- Pitched 200 innings for the fourth straight year and it showed at times.
Prediction----Texas Rangers------(Houston, longshot-Yankees)

7. Randy Wolf- Looked good for the Astros after Tommy John surgery.
Prediction----Dodgers-------(Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Nationals)

8. Mike Hampton- Finally healthy at the end of last season and the team he finished with, the Braves, should be the only team interested.
Prediction----Braves-------(no one else)

9. Brad Penny- Missed the whole season. But, is it in his head? Too talented. Sox want him badly.
Prediction----Red Sox-----(Blue Jays, Mets, Nationals, Astros, Cardinals, Pirates, White Sox, Royals)

10. Jon Garland- Pretty good the past few years, but ERA was terrible last season.
Prediction----Pirates-----(Blue Jays, Mets, Nationals, Cardinals, Royals)

11. Tom Glavine- Didn't really get to pitch for the Braves last year, will he this year?
Prediction----Braves----(Retire)

12. Pedro Martinez- I think he still has something left and no one would to see the Red Sox bring him back more than I. But, its an outside shot.
Prediction----Nationals----(Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers)

Relief Pitchers
1. Francisco Rodriguez- Record breaking year. Wants the big bucks. Looking at who needs relief help, the Mets CAN afford him, the Padres cant. But, if they lose Trevor Hoffman, which it looks like they might, maybe they get into the bidding war.
Prediction---Mets-----(Padres, Angels)

2. Trevor Hoffman- Someone said they can't believe he would sign anywhere else. We'll have to see.
Prediction---Padres---(Indians, Tigers, Cardinals. Angels, Rays)

3. Kerry Wood- He could be a monster swing man-34 saves
Prediction---Rangers--(Indians, Mets, Brewers, White Sox)

4. Brian Fuentes- Lefty Stopper and a great one.
Prediction----Mets(if they dont get KRod)---or Cardinals----(Indians)

5. Jason Isringhausen- His closer days are done, but someone might take a chance on a setup man-
Prediction----Phillies----(Rockies, Brewers)

6. Chad Cordero- Injured last year, but too good to pass up on.
Prediction---Rockies----(Philles, Mets, Brewers, Red Sox)

We'll see how I do....

Al D's Sideliners Notes will be up tomorrow...look forward to his story about the Watertown High ladies field hockey team. Thats tomorrow in this space.

Free Agent Comings and goings?

My predictions on where I think the big time free agents will end up...You can catch them two places, right here in a few days, or on Comcast, via the Boston Baseball Head Show with Dave McKay and Al Ditullio.

Later this month as promised, finally I will start the Comcast player of the month, as well as my look back at each team in the Yawkey League in 2008.

Al D's sidelineliner's notes will be featured as well as a special monthly Column From the Skip, as Skip McCarty sends us his thoughts.

If anyone else wants to be involved in this blog, please let me know, so we can come up with a fancy name for your column....Thanks guys....Cuz.

Lets have some fun with this....

Next week I'd like to publish a list of sports athletes with names that have something to do with Massachusetts cities....such as Tim Wakefield, Zach Randolph, Bobby Hull so forth and so on...send me your lists, if they are funny that would be great....

Will it be Dustin or Youk?

I have a pretty good feeling today that a Sox player will be bringing home the American League MVP trophy @ 2PM EST. Most likely it will be #15, Dustin Pedroia. But there is still the outside chance that Kevin Youkalis will win it. I think either way, they finish 1-2 in the voting. I've heard Josh Hamilton, who hit a brick wall around the All Star break, Carlos Quentin, who unfortunately for him, got in the way of too many pitches, (check his stats) & KRod.

Todays trivia question.....Who holds the Minnesota Twins record for hits in consecutive games and how many games in a row did he hit them in?????

Somerville Alibrandi Alumni softball game

Last week, October 11th to be exact, the Somerville Alibrandi Alumni took the field against a roster filled with current players in the second annual softball contest. The final score was Alumni 13 Roster 10. The game was played at the brand new Trum Park. If you haven't been by this new edifice, now is the time. Last year's game was won by the current roster, so the annual contest is now tied at one a apiece. This game offically closes out the Somerville Alibrandi 2008 season. The pressure is off coach Powers and his staff to make it 10 in a row. He can now sit back, relax like the rest of us.

Signings???

There is a rumor from Dave McKay that some free agent YBL players have already "signed" on to play with new teams. If anyone out there knows of anything completely official, please reply to this blog and I'll make sure that everyone else is aware.

YBL Free Agents to be????

With the losses of the Cambridge Spinners and the West Roxbury Devils this season, there will be quite a few outstanding ballplayers out there looking for work next season. The difference between the YBL and the Major Leagues, is that you aren't going to get paid in the millions for a long term contract to play here. You play here for the enjoyment. Fun, is not a word tossed around often. But, it is here at the Thomas Yawkey Baseball League. It's fun for the players, the fans, the media(that's right, we have a ball), the Parks Department, you name it, we all have fun. Just look how much fun that Commissioner and Baseball Head Dave McKay has in hosting his Comcast show. A lot of the YBL, Park League, Little League and others have been guests on his show and enjoyed it.

But, lets get back to business. I believe this year's Mark Texiera of the group is Cambridge' Randy Casey, Jr. Each and every season Casey has been up there amongst the league leaders in strikeouts and he always seems to crack the Yawkey five in ERA. This year his ERA was a sparkling 1.84. Unfortunately, he played for a club that didn't seem to put a lot of runs on the board for him in his support. Cambridge won ten games this year and Casey won five of them. His record of 5-4 was not impressive, but his year was. In 57 Innings, he allowed only 37 hits and only 15 earned runs in 2008. His strikeout to walk ratio was ridiculous. He struck out 87 and walked only 19. He hit 7, but that was because he liked to pitch inside. The most impressive stat all year...not one single wild pitch!!!!! His strikeout to innings pitch ratio was 1.53 and his WHIP was .982. He also pitched a dominating two innings in this years YBL-Dominican All Star Game, in which he was voted the #3 star of the tilt.

Looking at these numbers must make every executive/GM in the YBL drool over the prospect of adding this young gentleman to their team. Whoever gets him, wow!!!

Later, we'll update more free agents.

Well we almost did it again

When the Sox had that momentous comeback on Thursday from a 7-0 deficit in the bottom of the seventh, trailing in their ALCS set with the Rays, was there many who didn't expect the Sox to sweep the rest of the series as well? And when they won Game Six in Tampa, even those other naysayers just thought that with Jon Lester going in Game Seven, it was a wrap.
But, someone forgot to tell these guys from the Sunshine State, who before this season had never won more than 70 games in a whole entire year!!!...In 2008 they proved us all wrong, going from last to first, and capturing 97 victories this season alone. I thought that in watching the last inning on Sunday night, that I would be very depressed. But, in watching these youngsters jumping around on new closer to be, David Price (and he looks a lot like CC, doesn't he?), I found myself actually smiling and feeling pretty happy for them. Don't get me wrong, I would have preferred that the Red Sox won, but, it wasn't the Yankees, was it? I also think the Yankees must be awfully worried about this ALCS series, because clearly they cannot contend with either team.
Back to the Sox again, obviously we were hurt by the omissions of Mike Lowell and even in a round about way, Manny Ramirez. Jason Bay is a very good player, but, doesn't bring the intimidation factor that Manny brings to the plate, much less the protection of Big Papi, who's production suffered terribly in the post season, other than that big three run homer.
We will return in 09, but our competition will most likely be the Rays, probably not the Yanks.

Trivia question

Who is the All-Time leader in Hit By Pitches for the Tampa Bay Rays?

Oh what a night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last night, at the unbelievable Red Sox comeback victory over the Rays at Fenway, Comcast and the YBL were well represented in the stands. Arlen Showstack, Eric Shulman, his son Danny and yours truly went absolutely beserk in the bleachers, during the Sox 8-7 win. We are still alive, Barely!...It's funny, Eric and his son left just after Tampa took their 7-0 lead. Oh yea of little faith. Plus the fact, Danny had school the next day and the Shulman's do live on the South Shore. I think Arlen and I would have stayed if it was 170-0. You just have to look back to past history to know that you can not count out these Boston Red Sox of our generation. Boy, did Terry Francona manager the pants off Joe Madden in this game. It was brilliant bringing in Papelbon in the 7th, whereas Madden kept just about all his relievers in too long. And how about the brush back pitches to BJ Upton? When Okajima, threw inside to him on 0-2, he struck out on the next pitch. Someone else did it later on as well. We need to throw some fear into these guys. They were just going up hacking away. NO MORE!!!!
So many stars....JD Drew, Big Papi, Papelbon, Okajima, but the man that can't stand the Rays did them in, Coco Crisp.

Comeback Player of the year predictions

As promised, here are my National League Comeback Player of the year award predictions

1. Carlos Delgado-New York Mets
2. Ryan Ludwick-St. Louis Cardinals
3. Manny Ramirez-Boston Red Sox/Los Angeles Dodgers
4. Christian Guzman-Washington Nationals
5. Brian Giles-San Diego Padres

It was difficult choosing a comeback player in this league, as so many players qualified for it. I chose five, but the order could have gone any way. I gave it to Delgado, as everyone pretty much thought he was washed up after last season's .258 year, in which he only hit 24 homers and didn't even get 90 RBI's. Well we were all wrong. The former Blue Jay and current Met slugger went deep 38 times this year and drove in 115, while hitting a very capable .271. Ryan Ludwick had an incredible season for Ton LaRussa and the Cards. Last year he hit 14 homers and drove in 52 in what was his best year to date. That was to date. But did he break out this year. He hit .299 with 37 homers and 113 runs batted in. Manny Ramirez always has good years, so one would think he would never qualify for a comeback player, but last year was Manny's down year. He only hit .296 with 20 homers and 88 rbi's. But this year, between the Red Sox and Dodgers, dont get me started on that one, he hit .332 (3rd in the majors in hitting), belted 37 homers and drove in 121. Christian Guzman only played 46 games for Washington last year with 2 homers and with Felipe Lopez manning his position, it didn't look like there was a need for him to play when he became healthy. That is unless he hit. Wow, did he hit. To the tune of .316 with 9 homers and 55 rbi's in 138 games. The 5th choice came down to Brian Giles and Jim Edmonds. I chose Giles because he played 26 more games this year, drove in 12 more runs, walked 23 more times, struck out 9 less times and his average went up from .271 to .306.

Trivia for the day

Who holds the American League Rookie record for most RBI in a season? (hint, he led the league)

Comeback Player of the year predictions

Here are my predictions for comback player of the year

In the AL

1. Cliff Lee-Cleveland Indians
2. Mike Mussina-New York Yankees
3. Josh Hamilton-Texas Rangers
4. Milton Bradley-Texas Rangers

just missed....JD Drew-Boston Red Sox.

Lee was 5-8 last year with a 6.29 ERA and was sent down to Buffalo to get his stuff together. He rebounded in 2008 with a likely Cy Young performance 22-3, with a 2.54 ERA. Tough to vote against him. The Moose had his first 20 win season at age 39. Mussina was thought to be all washed up after last year's 11-10, 5.15 ERA year, in which it was expected he may not even make the starting rotation this year. But because of injuries, he came out strong and finished the same, going 20-11 with a 3.37 ERA. Josh Hamilton had an adequate season last year in the NL, hitting .292, with 19 homers and 47 ribbies for the Reds. But who expected the numbers he would put up this year after being acquired by Texas? .304, 32 Home runs and 130 RBIS, and probably the MVP of the home run hitting contest. Milton Bradley has always had trouble keeping himself healthy. Its been thought, its the only thing holding this guy back from having a monster breakout year. Last year he was hurt, as evidenced by his .265 average with only 13 home runs and 37 RBI's...but in 08, he brokeout, hitting .321 with 22 homers and 77 rbi's.

Yawkey baseball at the Hall of Fame

During the weekend of September 14, 2008, the Somerville Alibrandis and the Revere Rockies represented the Thomas A Yawkey Baseball League in an exhibition tournament held at the shrine of baseball, Cooperstown, New York.
The two teams played back to back games in this tourney. Revere won the first game and the teams came out deadlocked in game two.
When I get more information about who played, and any statistical stuff, you'll be amongst the first to know.

Trivia for the day

Who is the oldest position player to start in an All Star Game?

No New York teams

I thought I'd quickly comment on the wonderful breath of fresh air going through the major league playoffs. That would be the factor that there is no New York team that is currently participating. The Yankees, because they just aren't good enough, and the Mets, because they choked for the second straight season. This time, they blew a 2 and a half game wild card lead over Milwaukee with just 5 games to go. I'm disappointed for Pedro Martinez, as he is, as far as I'm concerned, still a class act. I'd still love to see him complete his career at Fenway.
It's interesting, as much as I can't stand the Yankees and what they stand for, my Cousin Arlen Showstack actually mentioned something to me that was very interesting. He asked me if all the Red Sox were traded to New York for all the Yankees, who would I root fot for?Hmmmm???!!!As tough as that sounds, rooting for ARod or Joba Chamberlain, makes me stomach turn at first. But I guess he's right. A fan of a team is a fan of a team first! I still hope it never happens. Only a Hall of Famer like Arlen would come up with that one.

Rookie of the Year

Here are my choices for the Major league Rookie of The Year

AL
1. Evan Longoria-Tampa Bay Rays
2. Alexei Ramirez-Chicago White Sox
3. Jacoby Ellsbury-Boston Red Sox
4. Brad Zieglier-Oakland A's
5. Alex Casilla-Minnesota Twins

Longoria came into this season with incredible expectations and he seemed to meet just about all of them. He was a great hitter, average wise and power wise, and a was a terrific third baseman. The Cuban Missile came out of nowhere to blast 30 homers for the Sox, to pretty much lead them to the Central Division crown. Everybody thought Ellsbury was the favorite for this award, but his slow start killed that. But, his finish has been near smoking and he stole 50 bases this year. Ziegler took over the closer spot for Street after throwing an unheard of amount of scoreless innings in a row. And Casilla replaced Brendan Harris when he went down with an injury, and the rest is history.

NL
1. Geovanny Soto-Chicago Cubs
2. Joy Votto-Cincinnati Reds
3. Jay Bruce-Cincinnati Reds
4. Jars Jurrjens-Atlanta Braves
5. Chase Headley-San Diego Padres

Soto came up at the end of last year and put huge batting numbers. He won the catching job for the Cubs, and belted 30 homers this year. Votto played first base and in the outfield and had both high average and power numbers for the Reds. Jay Bruce came up about a month and a half into the season and the NL could'nt get him out for two weeks. He could be THE star for years to come. Jurrjens could be the Ace of the staff for the Braves once the older pitchers start retiring, anytime now. Headley has incredible potential.

Mendonca & Morse have all appeared at one time or another at this guy.

3. Roy Halliday-Toronto
4. Daisuke Matsusaka-Boston
5. Jonathan Papelbon-Boston

1. Tim Lincecum-San Francisco
2. Johan Santana- New York
3. Brandon Webb-Arizona
4. Carlos Zambrano-Chicago

Predictions on MLB playoffs

Milwaukee Brewers vs Philadelphia Phillies
Difficult to pick against the very hot Brewers, especially after what they've done in the last week of the season. With my choice for NL MVP and last years AL Cy Young winner tossing for the Brew Crew, I will pick Milwaukee in an upset 3 games to 2 over the heavily favored Phils.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs Chicago Cubs
In this area, most people will be rooting on the Cubbies. Heck, in most areas, most people will be rooting on the Cubs. They haven't won a title in 100 years. If you match the teams player by player, the Cubs are a much better team. But, it doesn't always go that way. The Dodgers do have some playoff and World Series experience in Manny Ramirez, Nomar Garciaparra, Derek Lowe, Casey Blake & Rafael Furcal. The Cubs answer with Jim Edmonds, Alfonso Soriano, Ryan Dempster & Derrick Lee. Edge goes to the Dodgers here, but prediction, Cubs in 4.

Chicago White Sox vs Tamp Bay Rays
Whoever thought that the Rays would ever be favored to win a stickball match, much less a playoff series. But that is exactly what we see here. The White Sox had to work extremly hard the last week just to get here. And up and down the lineup, the only spot that the Sox have an advantage over Tampa is Shortstop and possibly DH. Tampa could sweep this in three.

Boston vs Los Angeles of Anaheim
It appears on paper that the Angels could crush the Red Sox in this series. They wont. Losing Beckett as an opening day starter for the Sox could be a blessing in disguise, as Lester has clearly been the Red Sox ace this season. John Lackey has struggled down the stretch for the Angels, and has never put up huge numbers vs Boston. The addition of Teixeira will help the Angel, but how much?It appears Mike Lowell & JD Drew will be returning just in time for the Old Towne Team. I like the Sox in 4.

My final season Yawkey League awards are in.

This is the first installment of the blog since the season has come to a close. Today we talk about my 2008 predictions for the YBL awards. We also update you on how the Kalamazoo Kings finished their season and finally you'll see Al D's first side-liners notes.

Lets start with the predictions (keep in mind, these are only my choices)
The MVP Award
1. Tony Iafolla-Brewers
2. Chris Santosuosso-East Boston
3. Adam Del Rio-Malden
4. Drew Tambling-McKay Club
5. Al Becker-East Boston

This was an incredibly tough call on my part. The Dirt Dog led the league with a .458 batting average and topped the YBL in OBP as well. He was also second in Hits, Doubles & OPS. Santosuosso was second in Homers and SLG %, 3rd in average, Hits & OPS. Del Rio, not only was a great hitter for the best regular season team, Malden, but his pitching stats were overwhelming. Tambling had an unbelievable rookie year at .432 and went 15-15 in stolen base attempts. Al Becker was his steady self, again batting around .400 and injecting leadership into the new champs.

Cy Young Award
1. Sean Gildea-Medford
2. Randy Casey, Jr.-Cambridge
3. Adam Del Rio-Malden
4. JT Ross-Black Sox
5. Tim Dacey-South Boston

This may have been the easiest choice for me. Gildea may have had the greatest single season by a pitcher in YBL history. He had a 0.50 ERA, allowing only 5 earned runs ALL YEAR! Randy Casey, Jr. had another stellar season for the Spinners, victimized, as usual, by low run support. He also had a terrific game in the Dominican All Star game. Del Rio could quite possibly be the next Marc Desroches. No disrespect meant to either player. He does it all. JT Ross seemingly came out of nowhere to lead the league in strikeouts. Tim Dacey was, well, Tim Dacey.

Good Guy of the year
1. Bernie Driscoll-Somerville
2. Rob Stephenson-South Boston
3. Marc Desroches-Somerville
4. Sean Gildea-Medford
5. Kevin George-South Boston

Almost impossible to pick 5 people in this category. Bernie Driscoll has always been nothing less than a superior gentleman since the day he joined the YBL, just barely getting the nod over Rob Stephenson. He was a particular fave of the Comcast crew, always hanging out after a game to help us out. Oh yes Rob, we notice. Marc Desroches, need I say more. Here's a player thats been on so many title teams, yet doesn't have an enemy in the world. Gildea is probably the most well-spoken person in the YBL. Kevin George is one of the nicest, most caring people I've ever met, bar none.

Rookie of the Year
1. Drew Tambling-McKay Club
2. Melvin Martinez-South End
3. Steve Lambert-Al Thomas
4. Jason Recore-East Boston
5. Ned Coffee-Revere

So many great first year players this year. One did outshine all. It was the McKay Club's Drew Tambling. He batted .432 with 6 doubles, 2 homers, 15 rbi and was the leader of the Beacons kiddie corp. Melvin Martinez was the best power hitter in the league, as he crushed 6 homers and drove in 18 runs. Steve Lambert had a great year for the A's, with 22 rbi and he went 16 for 18 in steals. Recore was the leadoff hitter for the new champions, batting .389, he led the league in hits, just what a leadoff guy is meant to do. Ned Coffee was part of the Rockie rush at the end of the season, belting 5 homers and driving in 24.

Comeback Player of the year
John Kincaid-Brewers Last season Kincaid played the same amount of games, 25, and had 8 more at bats 60-68. But, boy did he take advantage of those extra at bats. Last year hit .167. This year, almost 100 points higher, .265. He was one of the reasons the Brewers made it to the finals.

Coach of the year
1. Skip McCarty-East Boston
2. Jon Tenney-South Boston

McCarty helped hold this team together in the toughest conference in the YBL. He molded an incredible pitching staff and managed them superbly. Tenney was an outstanding coach, especially so that he was injured for much of the season.

Closer of the year
Jay Wisner-Malden He's been a great closer with Revere and now with Malden, leading the league in saves with 7. He had a 1.05 ERA, 27 strikeouts in less than 27 innings and his WHIP was a microscopic .086.

Executive of the year
1. Kevin George-South Boston
2. Dave McKay-McKay Club

Kevin has staffed a solid Saint team and he made a brilliant move in handing over the coaching reigns to Jon Tenney. Its also great to have the support of Kevin if you need a friend. He will stand by you through thick and thin. Dave McKay did something at the end of this season that most MLB managers and GM's should do. He reached out to his players one by one, congratulating them on a fine year. On a team THAT young, this was a brilliant move.

SILVER SLUGGER GOLDEN GLOVE
1B Melvin Martinez 1B Conner Reinfurt
2B Jason Recore 2B Jay Creveling
SS Dave Scioli SS Ryan Oshima
3B Chris Hartery 3B Mike Dibiase
C Tony Iafolla C Frank McPherson
OF Steve Lambert OF Chris Santosuosso
OF Chris Santosuosso OF Jay Shatto
OF Drew Tambling OF Sal Mendonca
DH Justin Crisafulli
P Mike Barthel P Chris Demers

We want to congratulate old friend John Leahy and his Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League on an extremely successful season. John, of course, was long time YBL voice and now calls play by play for the Merrimack Warriors of the Hockey East.

The Kings ran up against a buzzsaw in the finals in Windy City. The team ended up on the wrong side of a 3 games to none deficit after losing the last game Thursday night 6-5. The Kings had come from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the 4th, but it was not in the cards. Windy City scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th and held on for the championship. Anderson, Ramos, Williams & Araiza had RBI for the Kings in a losing effort in front of 1,760.

AL D'S SIDE-LINER'S NOTES
How does one describe a champion? The answer is simple. It is someone or a team that shows respect and holds their head high. This, in fact, happened in front of my eyes at St. Peter's Field in Cambridge, when East Boston wrapped up the championship over the Brighton Brewers recently. Coach Mike Powers and the Somerville Alibrandi's were dethroned after winning the title 10 out of 11 years, 9 in a row. Mike and members of his team were at each championship game watching and waiting to present the McKay plaque to the new champ, which turned out to be the Bluefish. Mike, asst coach Rob McDonough and members of the team were present as franchise owner Tony Alibrandi graciously presented the trophy to Skip McCarty and the Bluefish with what must have been bittersweet smiles. But, it was the congrats on a job well done that makes this Somerville team much more of a champion than all the trophies put together. Its what you when you are not getting the ring that shows the type of person that you are. In this case, Somerville showed only CLASS!!!!1

Yawkey League Finals Report

New Yawkey Champions are crowned!!!!

On August 29, 2008 history was made at St.Peter's Field in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as for the first time in ten years, a team other than the Somerville Alibrandis has walked away with the Thomas A. Yawkey Baseball Championsip.

The East Boston Bluefish, based on yet another dominating pitching performance from their starting rotation, shutout the mighty Brighton Brewers 4-0, to take the best of seven series, four games to one. After being felled by Kevin Christina and the Brewers in Game one, the Fish, as they are called as a team, came back with four remarkable pitching performances. In Game two, Chris Sandini pitched a complete game one hit shutout at Rogers Park to even the series. In Game three, Kyle Jones, gutted through a 139 performance, allowing only 2 hits, while needing and bases loaded double play to win 2-1. In Game 4, Chris Demers left after 5 innings with a 12-0 lead allowing only 3 hits in a 14-6 win.

Last evening Nate Titcomb tossed a tidy two hit shutout to close out the series at St. Peters, 4-0. The scoring begun in the very first inning when Playoff MVP Chris Santosuosso doubled with two outs. Bobby Foote then singled for the first of his two RBI on the evening. Chris Hartery then took one right of the helmet. There was a little concern, but, Chris was alright. Don't forget, this is the finals. No one feels the pain. Sean Tupper struck out Glavin to finish the first with no more damage. After one full inning, East Boston led 1-0.Before we go any further, we have to congratulate the Kalamazoo Kings of the Independent League Eastern Division,

I believe, for clinching first place in their division. For those of you who don't know, the former voice of the Yawkey League, John Leahy is the play by play announcer for the Kings, and he sends all his heartfelt best wishes to all.

Listen to Merrimack Hockey this season, as John will be back to call another exciting season for the Warriors. Back to the game. In the top of the second with two outs, John Kincaid doubled and took third on a wild pitch. But, Balger was retired on a fly to right. This hit was notable, as it was the last hit the Brewers would get in the series. In the bottom of the inning, Chris Caprio, who probably didn't get much sleep the night before, because of his newly born daughter, led with a single. Jeremy Creveling, one of the all time great fielders in the YBL, held back this season because of many injuries, followed with a perfect hit and run single into the vacated hole at second base. It was the first hit of the postseason for Creveling, but a big one. Caprio easily went to third. The next play was odd. Lembo hit a comebacker to Tupper, who appeared to hold Caprio at hold, but instead of looking him back to the bag, he threw to second to Creveling, as Caprio scored the second run. Tupper would get out of the inning unscathed, but it was now 2-0, Bluefish.

Nate Titcomb could probably smell the Championship plaque that Franchise Owner Tony Allibrandi of Somerville had to present to the winners, as he retired the Brewers on-two-three in the third. As I continue to mention in this blog, if we had any visitors to these games, I would do my best to make sure they were announced.

Last night three players of producer/director Arlen Showstack Brookline Orioles Little League team were on hand to lend their support to both teams. They were Garret Broderick, Patrick Webler & Jonus Webler, along with their dads, Jim Broderick and Steve Webler. They are also coaches. We thank you all for your support of the Yawkey League. In the bottom of the third, the scoring was closed.

That man again, Chris Santosousso, who also looks like he is the leading candidate for the regular season MVP as well, led off with a screeching double to left center. This was Santosuosso's seventh straight hit. Foote singled. yet again to knock in Santossuosso. Foote stole second. Then it appeared Tupper settled down, striking out both Hartery and Glavin. But, Caprio, hit an RBI single, to make it 4-0.We want to send out a big thanks to the Cambridge Parks & Recreations Department for having St. Peter's in pristine( no pun intended) condition for the game. Scott and Keith/Kevin did an absolutely wonderful job.In the top of the 4th, Brendan Klaes led with a walk for Brighton, Mike Dibiaase followed by reaching on an error by Recore.

Was this the Brewers chance? AJ Vacanti was next, he had missed the previous game with a suspension. AJ grounded one right back to Titcomb, who turned the 1-6-3 double play. After four innings, the Brewers had left 20 men on base in the last two games alone. You don't win much by doing that.Today's trivia question....What team was Yankee outfielder Bobby Abreu drafted by? Answer on the bottom. In the bottom of the 4th, the Bluefish with one out, got singles by Recore and Becker, bringing up the red hot Santosuosso. He had a line drive smash to third base that Tomaro actually caught on the fly. No runs scored that inning.Looking on the sidelines, you could see that Mr. Santosousso, Mr Foote & Mr Titcomb were on hand to root on their sons. Good for them. It's always great to have support.

Top of the 5th, Titcomb once again put the Brewers down one-two-three. Inthe bottom half, Glavin & Caprio were both hit by pitches, but, no damage was done as Tupper pitched around this. The Comcast crew was on top of their game last night. Producer/Director Arlen Showstack called one of his better games ever...he shines in the big games. Justin Shanahan was our first base cameraman and first year Rookie Tom McIntyre got baptism under fire at third base. John Mattinson, long time veteran was the hand held guy, and he was certainly needed for the interviews at the end of the game.

Dave McKay, continues to shine brighter each and every game that he calls on the mic. Who whould have thought? And Al D...A marvelous job as analyst last night, and who interviews better? Pat Clifford catches so many replays...Chris Murphy gets no sleep, yet he's there to shade. And how about Jen Gonyea, two days ago, we didn't even know her. Know we can't do without her. Jim Burke is a master on audio. Kevin Howlett is a strong engineer. But, Bill Goode is just incredible as a graphics person.

I've never worked with anyone so quick before. I toss him stats and its as if he already knows what I'm going to give him.Ok, its the 6th inning. Brighton needs to do something now or face elimination.

But, Titcomb eliminates the side very quickly. Just three more outs and East Boston is the champion. In the bottom of the 6th, Mike Lewis has come on to pitch for the Brewers. Tupper pitched outstanding, but, he needed to be perfect tonight. In 5 innings, Tupper gave up 4 runs on 9 hits, he had 3 strikeouts, walked none, but hit two in his last inning. Lewis retired the first two batters. Santosuosso walked, Foote then got his third hit of the night, a single to left, but Santosuosso got a little greedy and was thrown out by Kincaid at third.

Before we go the seventh and last inning, Somerville Franchise owner Tony Allebrandi, Coach Mike Powers, Asst Rob McDonough, and players Derek Bates, Tom McDonough & Sal Mendonca were settling around the announce booth. The reason for that is that if East Boston were to win tonight, Somerville, the classy group that they are, were going to present the McKay Award to the Champions of the league. I imagine this is probably a little bitter sweet for them. But in speaking to the guys, they all either said "It was time" or "we'll be back"Okay here we go, top of the seventh. Mike Dibiase, one of the better hitters on the team (hitting 181 in the post season) leads of with a walk.

AJ Vacanti, a veteran of more than one team, (hitting 214) strikes out. Anthony Thomaro, 0 for 3 (176), strikes out. John Kincaid ,who has one of the two hits today (158), hits a grounder to short, Recore comes up clean, throws to Glavin...and for the first time in franchise history.

The East Boston/Roslindale Bluefish are the Yawkey Baseball League Champions. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?

The MVP of the playoffs was Chris Santosuosso, who led the league in post season batting average at .442 and in RBI with 11, The last two games of this series were dominating games for him as he went 7 for 8. This is not a shocker to the Brewers, as during the regular season, he went 7 for 7. The man loves to face the Brew Crew. Bobby Foote went 14-42 for a .333 average in the postseason average, while RBI machine Chris Hartery drove in 9 more. The Bluefish starting rotation of Chris Demers, Chris Sandini & Kyle Jones all had ERA under 1.00 in the playoffs and finished 1-3 in that stat.

During the trophy presentation, Coach Skip McCarty was very gracious to the Brewers and Coach Mike Freire about his teams injuries and not being able to field the full team they had all year. Al D, got words from him, Freire, Santosuosso and a short word from Demers. Dave McKay spoke with Tony Allibrandi, Mike Powers and congratulated both teams on an exciting series. The only thing dissapointing about this is that its over. Well, just because this season is over, doesn't mean this column needs to be over. If there is anything that you want me to write about, sports wise, maybe I'll show up and cover it,,,some of you have heard me say this before, "YOU NEVER KNOW".cousin stuOh, here's the answer to today's trivia question....What team was Yankee outfielder Bobby Abreu drafted by? The Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Yawkey League Finals Game four Wrapup
by Cousin Stu Sklaver

In a game expected to be dominated by star aces, the East Boston Bluefish moved one step away from capturing the first first Yawkey League championship from a team other than the Somerville Alibrandris over the last 10 years, with a resounding 14-6 win over the reeling Brighton Brewers. With the win, the Fish, as the team screams out after each team huddle, leads the best of seven series, three games to one.

Tonights game five, and possible final game, is to be played at the East Boston "HOME" field, St. Peters. Park in Cambridge, also home of the Old Time Baseball game, across the street from the Comcast studios on Sherman St.

Last night's starters were Kevin Christina for the Brewers, who coming into the game was a dominating 3-0, with 19 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched, allowing only 7 walks. But the key statistic here was that in those 21 IP's, he'd given up only one earned run for an ERA of an incredible 0.33.

Until last night. Christina, with his team down 2 games to 1, and missing some vital cogs to their offense, like Vacanti, who was sitting out a one game suspension, Marc Hordon, last year's triple crown winner, out for the year, Garrett Tingle & Anthony Tomaro, was forced to pitch on 3 days rest and you could just see he was not himself in the first inning.

Jason Recore, who was an on base machine last night, reaching 4 out of 5 times, singled, Al Becker walked, Chris Santosuosso, who each and every day is laying claim to not only the league MVP, but the post season trophy as well, doubled in both runners. It was only one of Santosuosso's 5-5 night, in which he had 2 doubles, 4 runs scored, and 5 RBI's. Just another day at the office for the obvious #1 star of the game. To continue the inning, Bobby Foote walked.

Then it appeared that Christina would settle down. He struck out Hartery and Glavin. But, he then walked Chris Caprio to load the bases. Caprio, who just became a proud father at about midnight the same night, still had his priorities straight by coming to the game???!!!At this point Christina, with the bases loaded, commited a balk, scoring Santosuosso and East Boston went up 3-0. Mellor walked. And finally Mike Lembo ended the first by striking out.

Chris Demers, the East Boston pitcher had been playing in left field the entire series. But, he is a stud on the mound, as evidenced by his 2-0 (now 3-0) 13 strike outs, 4 walks, and an ERA of only 0.50 going into the game. You would think this would be the perfect choice for coach McCarty to choose to throw for game 4. The diminutive lefty went five shutout innings, not overpowering at all, but he got the job done. In his 5 innings, he allowed 3 hits, 0 runs, struck out 7, walked 7 and had a wild pitch. The Brewers were frustrated, because, they did not have one clean inning against Demers. They left 2 on in the first, second, third and the fifth. But, they left the bases loaded in the fourth. A grand total of 11 runners were left on base in the first 5 innings alone!!!

Back to the scoring. In the second, Recore reached on an error by Klaes and stole his 8th base of the post season. Becker singled. Santosuosso singled, scoring Recore, moving Becker to second. Bobby Foote singled to left and on the Kincaid error Becker came in to score. Hartery singled, scoring Santosuosso. Caprio grounded out, scoring Foote. After two innings, for all intent and purposes it was over. 7-0, Bluefish.

During the game, we were very excited to have the one and only Al Ditullio roaming the sidelines. Al got some fantastic interviews last night. First he spoke with Skip McCarty of East Boston. Then with Mike Freire of the Brewers. He also got a chance to talk to one of the classiest guys in the game today, trust me I know, Kevin George, franchise holder of the South Boston Saints. What an unbelievable year that team had this season. Kevin, you can be proud of Jon Tenney, Rob Stephenson and the guys. Al, outstanding job once again. Back to the game.

In the third inning, Dave McKay and Eric Shulman our play-by-play and color analysis guys had to rub their eyes to see what was happening on the mound. Christina was being lifted, but the new pitcher was JOSE CANSECO, NO..Tony Iafolla, the Yawkey League's leading hitter. It was his first appearance on the mound this season. The rust definately showed. Lembo led the third with a single. Recore and Becker would walk to load the bases for that man again, Chris Santosuosso. He got his third hit of the evening and knocked in Lembo, bases remained loaded. Foote walked, knocking in Recore. Hartery was hit by a pitch to get an RBI the hard way, Becker scoring. Then Tony would settle, retiring the next three batters. After three, East Boston 10-0.

It was a cool evening last night at Ronan Park, so the crowd was not as large as it could have been, but, as I will do in this space every game, if there any special people that show up I will acknowledge it. Kevin George, as I already mentioned once before was in attendance. Mark Freire, Mike's brother was also there last night to cheer the Brewers on. Evelyn Burke, the graphics person for Comcast last night, who did another wonderful job last night, had visitors as well. Her husband Jim, was with us last night as well as their son Brandon. Boy is he getting big.
Lets go to the 4th inning. Dan Chapman in to pitch for the Brewers. He actually gets the Bluefish 1-2-3.

In the 5th, Eastie is at it again. There's a reason that these two teams were the two top hitting in the league in the REGULAR season. We just haven't seen in the playoffs because as we all know, pitching shines in the postseason. It has here. Santosuosso leads off the inning with his fourth straight hit, a single, after a one out Hartery walk, Glavin ropes a tremendous ground rule double. If he doesn't remind you of Jim Thome, I don't know who does. Santosuosso scored on that hit. Caprio walked to load the bases again. Mellor reaches on a force play to knock in Hartery. Lembo flies out. Incredible as it seems, its now 12-0 Bluefish.

How about the camerawork by Frank Morello at first base and Justin Shanahan at third base. Right on the ball as usual. Tom and Bill, our interns were working the cameras last night as well. We even had a young lady named Jen, who was gripping for the first time with us. Chris Murphy was running replay. Kevin was our engineer for the evening. Some guy named Cousin Stu, was doing the stats and feeding them to Evelyn Burke. All of this was overseen, of course, by the best in the business, the producer/director/Hall of Famer Arlen Showstack.

After five innings and such a seemingly insurmountable lead, NO SUCH THING (AS DAVE McCKAY WOULD SAY), Coach Skip McCarty decided that it was time to rest Chris Demers. He brought in reliever Matt Smith cold.

The Bluefish don't usually need to use their bullpen often because of their rubber armed starters, but, 12-0, what the heck. What happened next was almost historic. In the Brewers 6th, Justin Real led with a walk, one of three he would get tonight, Mike Balger followed with a single. Mike Muccio followed with a single to load the bases.

Remember, this is a team that only could muster 2 hits last night and 1 the night before and they just got 2 in a row. Mike Pollak was next, and he singled in the first Brewer run, Real scoring, bases still loaded. Iafolla, the league's leading hitter next. He hits a sinking liner to center that falls for a single, but Santosuosso over-runs the ball for an error, three runs score and Iafolla is on third. Wow. Klaes follows with another seeing single knocking in Iafolla and its suddenly 12-5. There are still no outs. Dibiase walks. Matt Smith is clearly rattled. Kincaid hits a grounder to Recore and he boots it for an error. Bases still loaded, no outs. End of the night for Matt Smith. Coach McCarty calls on one of his closers this year Ian Titcomb. Chapman strikes out. Real walks for the second time in the inning, Klaes scores. Bases still loaded. Balger strikes out. Muccio flies deep to right. What an inning for the Brewers. They've come alive. After 5 1/2...its now 12-6.

In the bottom half of the inning the Bluefish put it away, Recore walked. Pinch hitter Leonelli sacrificed him to second. Santosuosso got his fifth hit of the night, a double, his 5th rbi as well, as Recore scored. Santosuosso raised his average in the post season from 343 to425 in one night. He is 17 for 40. Wow. Foote followed with a Rbi single to close out the scoring.

In the top of the 7th, the Brewers again left two men on base without scoring, for an unreal total of 17 for the game. It's not easy to win games when you leave that many men on base. They clearly had plenty of chances.

Anyway, Brewers find themselves in a big hole, down three games to one in this best of seven series. Its now do or die. Comcast will be there for the rest of this however long it goes. Watch it your local access channel.
